Mass of the Galaxy Inferred from Outer Rotation Curve
Using an outer rotation curve of the Galaxy, we explore the galactic constants and the mass of the Galaxy. We show that Θ0 of 200 km s −1 is more favorable than the IAU standard value of 220 km s, and also show that if Θ0 is smaller than 207 km s −1 the rotation curve beyond 2R0 is declining in Keplerian fashion. In the case of Θ0= 200 km s −1 and R0= 7.6 kpc, the total mass and the extent of t...
متن کاملOn the Consistency between the Outer Rotation Curve of the Galaxy and the Microlensing Rate towards the Large Magellanic Cloud
Recent determination of the outer rotation curve of the Galaxy suggests that the total Galactic mass is likely to concentrate into a region of radius ∼ 2R0. If this finding is correct, the previously estimated optical depth of microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) should be correspondingly reduced. It appears that a truncated Galactic halo model instead of the standard is...
متن کاملNgc 4244: a Low Mass Galaxy with a Falling Rotation Curve and a Flaring Gas Layer
I present sensitive high resolution VLA B, C, and D array observations of the almost edge-on Scd galaxy NGC 4244 in the 21-cm spectral line of neutral atomic hydrogen. The gas layer of NGC 4244 is rather symmetric in all respects, i.e. the surface density distribution, flaring and warping. This symmetry allows for a reliable determination of the rotation curve, despite the fact that the galaxy ...
متن کاملOn the Mass Profile of Galaxy Cluster CL 0024+1654 Inferred from Strong Lensing
Observations of a flat density profile in the cores of dark-matter-dominated halos on the two extremes of mass for virialized objects in the universe, dwarf galaxies and galaxy clusters, present a serious challenge to the current standard theory of structure formation involving Cold Dark Matter (CDM). By contrast, N-body simulations of halo formation in the latter indicate density profiles whic...
متن کامل0 Signatures of Galaxy - Cluster Interactions : Spiral Galaxy Rotation Curve Asymmetry , Shape , and Extent
The environmental dependencies of the characteristics of spiral galaxy rotation curves are studied in this work. We use our large, homogeneously collected sample of 510 cluster spiral galaxy rotation curves to test the claim that the shape of a galaxy’s rotation curve strongly depends on its location within the cluster, and thus presumably on the strength of the local intracluster medium and on...
